SEO

Can customers find you when they search online?

There are about 2 billion websites out there. When a potential customer searches online they will find thousands of potential websites to choose from. How will a potential customer find your website? There is hope. Search Engine Optimization is the answer.

Search Engine Optimization, more commonly called SEO, can help to make sure a potential customer can find your business online. SEO can increase the online visibility of your business, helping to drive more people and high-quality leads to your website. SEO is an essential part of any website’s success.

What is SEO?

When you search for something online using a website like Google.com or Bing.com, you are using a search engine. In response to search terms you enter the search engine will give you a list of relevant website suggestions, and ideally help you find what you are looking for.

SEO is the process of helping your website pages show up in search engine results when someone searches using keywords related to your website content. The goal is to not only have your web pages show up in search results but to also rank well. Ranking is all about where you appear in those search results. Are you on page 1 in the top ten, or are you at 75 on page 7, or nowhere to be found.

Ideally you want to be on the first page of the search results when someone searches with a keyword relevant to your website content. Many people don’t even bother to check page 2 of the results when they search, so not ranking well can mean many people never find your business.

What determines where you rank in the search results?

Search engines like Google use over 200 factors to rank website pages including quality of content, page popularity, and website quality. And of course how relevant your website is to the keywords used by the searcher is important in determining the ranking of your website.

Basically, search engines like Google and Bing are evaluating your website in all kinds of ways.

Common tasks associated with SEO include creating high-quality content, optimizing content around specific keywords, and building backlinks.

There are a wide variety of things that can help your website rank higher, and they can be broken down into three categories – On-Page SEO, Off-Page SEO, and Local SEO:

What are backlinks? If another website links to your website, then you have a backlink from that other website. Link building is the process of getting those backlinks from other websites linking back to your website.

Why is this important? Backlinks have a big impact on how search engines rank your website, and how often your website appears in search results.  When you get a backlink from a website that has a high authority or popularity the benefit you get is even greater.

The link building process can involve finding directory and industry websites where a link to your website site can be placed. It can also include researching to find websites that would be possible candidates to link to your website, and then working to contact these website to persuade and convince them to link to your website.

Content Development

The goal is to create linkable assets for your website. What are linkable assets? A linkable asset is content created for the purpose of getting other websites to link to that content. In effect, this is another type of link building, but here you are not asking for links, and instead other websites decide to link to your website on their own when they link to your content.

There is a wide variety of linkable asset content that can be created for your website. For example, infographics, eBooks, free tools, surveys or studies, resource pages, and videos.

Keyword research is an excellent source for ideas for linkable content. Search statistics can reveal actual questions that people are asking that relate to your industry, product and services. Those questions are ideal subjects for some type of linkable asset content.

The links to your website from other websites (backlinks) will improve your website’s ranking in search results.
